Teachers and staff should follow a clear, step-by-step protocol when a cyberbullying situation is identified. Immediate action, calm communication, and appropriate escalation are crucial.
Collaboration with educational actors
Effective resolution requires coordination among teachers, school counsellors, psychologists, school leadership, and in some cases, external organisations (police, NGOs).
Action protocol
A structured set of procedures to ensure consistent and effective responses:
• Identify and document the case.
• Inform the safeguarding lead / responsible authority in school.
• Engage families of both victim and aggressor.
• Provide immediate support to the victim.
• Apply disciplinary or restorative measures with the aggressor.
• Follow up with monitoring and evaluation.
Communication with families
Families must be involved early and transparently. Communication should be empathetic, solution-focused, and respectful of confidentiality.
Support for victims and aggressors
Victims: counselling, peer support, academic adjustments if necessary.
Aggressors: behavioural guidance, empathy training, restorative justice approaches.
Example Protocol – Key Elements
Identification & Documentation: Teacher records the incident using an Incident Log Form.
Notification: Inform the school’s safeguarding lead / anti-bullying coordinator.
Family Involvement: Contact both victim’s and aggressor’s families.
Immediate Support: Provide safe space and psychological support for the victim.
Disciplinary/Restorative Action: Intervene with the aggressor, applying school rules.
Follow-up: Monitor situation, document progress, and provide additional interventions if needed.
